Anyone can achieve great things!
Making an impact is easier than you might think, Vitality founder Adrian Gore tells High Performance podcast
Thirty years ago, Vitality founder Adrian Gore set a simple but very important goal: rather than just paying out when something goes wrong, shouldn’t insurance prevent bad things from happening in the first place? That question is at the heart of Vitality and our core purpose even today.
Speaking on the High Performance podcast recently to mark the launch of his new book, The Four Principles: Multiply Your Impact in Life and Leadership, Gore shares the ideas that shape his philosophy.
The conversation explores the power of “disciplined optimism”, setting ambitious goals and how behavioural science can be used to drive long-lasting positive change, not just in business but our personal lives too. These ideas underpin the Vitality Programme and the rewards and partners you enjoy every day; to help us make small lifestyle changes to be our best possible self, whoever and wherever we are in life. Are you a "super sleeper"?
Data analysis suggests that less sleep can be more
Under 60, physically active and a creature of habit when it comes to bedtime? You could be what experts are calling a “super sleeper”. This group appears to avoid the negative health effects normally associated with not getting enough sleep, research based on more than 150,000 Vitality members has revealed. Building on previous research with the London School of Economics, which found that positive sleep habits could add up to two years to life expectancy, the data showed Vitality members who combined regular exercise with stable bedtimes and good-quality sleep achieved similar health outcomes to those sleeping more than seven hours a night. Ultimately, it’s not just how long but how consistently you sleep that matters, the analysis revealed.
Selfie control
AI can predict cancer survival with a single selfie
A new artificial intelligence (AI) tool can judge a person's biological age just by analysing face creases and contours using a single photograph. Using state-of-the-art technology called FAHR-FaceAge, it can also assess survival risk for individuals diagnosed with cancer. For example, cancer patients going through radiotherapy in the US who looked five or more years younger than their actual age were found to have a 17% higher chance of a positive outcome. Developed by a nonprofit in Massachusetts, doctors noted that while facial photographs could support personalised treatment in future, more research and testing is required before rolling it out more widely.
Working unwell
Research reveals the cost of poor health on the UK workforce
A new global study has shown the biggest threat to the UK economy isn't people taking time off work. It's employees struggling with their health while still on the job. Alarmingly, poor health among the UK's workforce is costing the economy an estimated £241bn a year, according to the Global Health & Productivity Index1 conducted by Vitality and RAND Europe. When it comes to low productivity at work, mental wellbeing emerged as a particularly important factor, with younger workers reporting the highest levels of distress, the report also found.
